The more I visit our project the more I realise that what Noble Endeavours is doing in Datu Sandongan is unique. According to other NGOs and government leaders who I meet, the program is taking a different and exciting holistic approach to building sustainable communities in one of the poorest regions in the Philippines.

I am convinced that there are no accidents occurring in the strategic relationships we are establishing with key government leaders in the region.

I met with Congresswoman Nancy A.Cotamco at her home recently where we talked about ways that we could partner together to bring change to the indigenous communities in the region. Nancy is an Indigenous person herself and she accepted an invitation to visit the Noble Endeavours project later that week to see the work and take lunch with the children. I have also been invited to present the Noble Endeavours plan for the next three years to both the Governor and Vice Governor.

Birthing Clinic … Plans have now been drawn up and approved that will see the establishment of a birthing and medical clinic as part of the Janice McKay Community Centre. This clinic is a partnership between the Provincial Office of Cotabato and the Local Government unit and on completion will result in many lives being saved, and provide ongoing medical support in an area that has at present no medical facilities. Our total budget to build the centre is $14,000 and I welcome any support in building the clinic as soon as possible.

A big thank you to Joanne Smith who manages Noble Awards which allows me to continue to develop Noble Endeavours.

” I had the privilege to attend the opening of the Janice McKay Community Centre
in October last year. The centre is in an area that services the poorest people of Mindano, Phillipines. We lived in the centre for two days and it did not take long for me to lose my heart to the tribal people of this area. Even though we do not speak the same language they are mothers, fathers, grandparents and children all wanting the same things we take for granted, education for their children and to have their medical needs met.

The plans have been drawn up to fill under the building and have a full time clinic for medical and also birthing needs of the area. I had one man say to me as he filled his water container with fresh water from our water purification plant “Thank God for the fresh water and for Noble Endeavours” I cannot wait to see the next stage completed as this will literally be life changing for them.”

I just spent 2 weeks visiting the project in Sandangan and witnessing the exciting developments as the Janice McKay Community Centre nears completion. Children are now enjoying classes in the building and have started a new school year with brand new backpacks, 2 pairs of thongs and a raincoat to keep out the monsoonal showers! It certainly is now a real centre for community life.

Peter Starr and I also continued our series of strategic meetings with government and community leaders to hopefully bring much needed economic development to these isolated tribal regions by involving Australian business in rural activities.
